Arkansas spring game to air nationally on ESPN

FAYETTEVILLE - For the first time in school history, the University of Arkansas football spring game will air live nationally on ESPN. The telecast will showcase the school's final spring football intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, April 16, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. CT.

"We are excited that the University of Arkansas and Razorback Football will be featured on ESPN this spring with the broadcast of the Red-White football game," Arkansas vice chancellor and director of athletics Jeff Long said. "With the success of our football program under Coach Bobby Petrino we wanted to keep our momentum building. The SEC's unprecedented partnership with ESPN provided us the opportunity to work with ESPN to make televising our spring Red and White game a reality. The result is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our program and University".

In addition to the spring game, multiple Razorback athletic events will take place on the Fayetteville campus from April 15-17. Razorback baseball, softball and women's tennis will all be in action at home during the weekend. To avoid a conflict with the spring game, the Arkansas-Mississippi State baseball game on Saturday, April 16, will be moved to 6 p.m. Abbott Nutrition Razorfest, a free family event, will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a pep rally in the parking lot in front of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Saturday. Additional details regarding the full weekend of events will be released soon.

"This is a great opportunity for fans to once again show the pride and passion they have for the Razorbacks," said UA football head coach Bobby Petrino. "The atmosphere our fans created at our games last year was electric, and recruits responded in a positive way to our coaches about the environment they saw. I believe the time of the game gives fans statewide a chance to be a part of sharing our program with a national audience."

Arkansas is set to open spring practices on March 15 and the 2011 season begins against Missouri State on Sept. 3 at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Petrino Adds Small

Last night Petrino added a fullback to the 2011 recruiting class with the commitment of Kiero Small from a Hartnell Community College in California. He was all state in High School 3 years ago when he played in Maryland. Small is short in height, but brings bowling ball blocking skills. He's 5'9" and 255 lbs. He runs a 4.7 40 and has played both linebacker and fullback in high school. He could be counted on to play early for the Razorbacks with the graduation of Van Stumon from the University. He committed after his visit to Arkansas the weekend of January 21-23. His commitment brings the total number to 31 just a day prior to National Signing Day.

Two New Commitments

As the final weekend before signing day came to an end, Coach Petrino was able to pull in two more commitments for the 2011 class. One is from Alabama and the other is from Canada. Trey Flowers of Huntsville, Al is a 6'3" 250 defensive end. Flowers is a long and athletic player with good speed and strength. Petrino was able to flip him from his commitment to Georgia Tech.
The second player to commit was Brett Weir of London, Ontario Canada. Weir is a very athletic player who could play many different positions in college. He is 6'4" 220 and runs a 4.4 40. Weir, a football star in Canada, received little recruiting attention outside of the Big 10 region, but he definitely has the athletic skill set to find plenty of playing time at the college level. While he currently is not rated in the Rivals system, his film shows his athletic abilities. He likes to hit too...

Arkansas Offensive Tackle Anthony Oden has re-enrolled at the University of Arkansas after being forced to withdraw from classes in the fall semester due to a battle with mononucleosis. Oden, a 6'8" 330 pound tackle, is expected to participate in spring drills and compete for a starting position on the line. He will be a junior this fall.

Brey Cook | OL | 6-7 | 310 | Springdale, Ark. (Har-Ber HS) |
The Springdale, Ark., native was ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Arkansas, the sixth-best offensive tackle in the nation and 59th overall recruit, according to Rivals.com. He also was named the No. 6 offensive tackle in the country by Scouts.com. His Har-Ber squad won the 2009 Class 7A Arkansas State Championship in his junior season. Har-Ber High School advanced to the state semifinals in 2008 and 2010. Cook was honored as an Under Armour All-American, playing in the Under Armour All-American Game in Tampa,Fla. earlier this month, and was named to MaxPreps.com's 2010 U.S. Air Force All-America team. Cook was also named to the ESPNU Top 150 class of 2011 list. He was recognized on the AHSAA's Class 7A West All-State team as a senior. Cook was selected to ArkansasVarsity.com's All-State team, receiving first-team accolades. He was coached by Chris Wood. Cook had numerous offers from around the nation and selected the Razorbacks over Oklahoma, Auburn, Alabama and USC.

Coming off of two straight 60-catch, 1,000-yard receiving seasons, Funderburk joins the highly-touted Arkansas wide receiver corps. Rated as the No. 36 wide receiver prospect in the nation by Scouts.com and 39th by Rivals.com, Funderburk played for head coach Richard Morgan's successful program where he made 65 catches for 1,464 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2010. He finished his final prep season with a 12-2 record and made an appearance in the Division 6 regional final. Oscar Smith High School won the 2008 Virginia Class Six state championship and made a state semifinal appearance in 2009. Funderburk made 62 catches for 1,150 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2009. At the conclusion of his high school career, he was picked to the VirginiaPreps.com's All-State first team. He was ranked as the No. 9 recruit in the state by Rivals.com. Funderburk chose Arkansas over Michigan, Florida and West Virginia.

In 2010 at North Carolina Tech Prep, Gilbert notched 62 tackles and five sacks, helping the squad to a 9-1 record. In 2009 at John Curtis Christian, Gilbert made 36 tackles and was a force in the backfield, notching seven tackles for loss. He helped the team to a 13-1 record and a state championship game appearance. Gilbert decided on the Razorbacks while also receiving interest from Auburn, Memphis and Louisiana-Lafayette. He was a high school teammate of current Razorback offensive lineman Luke Charpentier.

Thomas joins the Razorbacks after a successful season at Coffeyville Community College in 2010. Thomas made 48 tackles, including 15 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two pass deflections for junior college coach Darian Dulin. During his senior year at Muskogee High School, Thomas had 89 tackles (68 solo), 15 tackles for loss, five sacks, four quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles and two blocked field goals. On offense, he carried the ball six times for 16 yards and a touchdown. He was listed as the No. 71 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 19 prospect in Oklahoma by Rivals.com. He was named the Muskogee Phoenix District (6A-3) Defensive Lineman of the Year. His high school coach was Matt Hennesy. He was also recruited by Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Kansas State.

Wade joins the Razorbacks after a successful stint at Milford Academy in New Berlin, N.J. The wide receiver known for his speed was a big-play threat for Milford in 2010, catching 26 passes for 565 yards and six touchdowns. Wade also took an 85-yard kickoff back for a touchdown. As a senior at Andrew Jackson High School, Wade recorded 53 receptions for 769 yards and nine touchdowns and returned five punts for scores in 2009. In 2008, Wade caught 58 passes for 738 yards and 14 touchdowns and returned 10 punts for nearly 500 yards and three touchdowns. Wade was ranked as the No. 4 prep athlete in the nation by Rivals.com. Coming out of high school, he was rated the No. 48 athlete in the nation by Rivals.com and also rated the No. 73 recruit in Florida. He was listed by Scout.com as the No. 91 wide receiver nationally. He excelled on the basketball court, averaging 15.6 points a game as a junior while playing shooting guard. He was coached at Andrew Jackson by Kevin Sullivan. He was recruited out of high school by South Carolina, Purdue, Ole Miss, Illinois, Miami, South Florida and about 15 other schools.

2011 Schedule Announced

Today, the University of Arkansas announced their football schedule for 2011. Most notable is the LSU game, which was moved back to Friday. That game and the Alabama game are both road games and appear to be the two toughest games on the schedule. The three non-conference games that open the season will allow the winner of the Spring QB Battle (Tyler Wilson/Brandon Mitchell/Jacoby Walker) the opportunity to get some warm up games under their belt before hitting the road to take on the Crimson Tide. Also of note is the addition of the Tennessee Volunteers to the schedule.

Petrino Lands Gosha

Petrino nabbed another big-time player from Florida today with the commitment of defensive lineman Lonnie Gosha. Gosha is a Rivals 4 Star player with a 6'3" 270 pound frame. He will likely play defensive end or defensive tackle for the Razorbacks. He chose Arkansas over Miami, Florida State, Florida and Alabama. Gosha is from Lake Butler, Florida and he played for Union County High School. Rivals rates him as the 15th best defensive tackle nationally.

As Petrino seeks to close out this outstanding recruiting class, he will go after a few more big time recruits in the coming weeks. Look for this class to be pretty well wrapped up a week before national signing day, which is February 2. Go Hogs!

"After careful consideration, I have decided to declare for the 2011 NFL Draft. Ever since I was a kid, my dream has always been to play for the Razorbacks and I am thankful I had the opportunity to do so. A year ago, when I returned to school I said I wanted to help lead this team to a place among the nation's elite and for the Razorback community to have a mindset to expect greatness. There is no doubt we got there together and this program will continue to play games on the biggest stages and when it does we'll come out swinging. Playing in the NFL is a goal of mine and I am grateful to the people that have prepared me to take the next step. Coach (Bobby) Petrino is a winner, a man of character and the hardest worker I have ever seen. I'd also like to thank Coach (Garrick) McGee for everything he has done for me and in particular helping develop my mental approach to the game. The leadership of Chancellor David Gearhart and Director of Athletics Jeff Long is a model for me and I am extremely appreciative of the tireless work they do for all University of Arkansas students every day. The Razorback fans are the greatest in the country and their support for me and the team throughout my career has been humbling. Hogs Lose Sugar in Nail Biter

Coach Petrino and the Razorbacks lost to Ohio State in heartbreaking fashion in a game where failure to capitalize on open opportunities significantly changed the momentum and score of the game. From dropped passes, to missed fumble recoveries, to poor passes, to penalties, the Razorbacks could not seem to make the big plays when needed. It started with Joe Adams dropping a pass on the opening play that would have been a touchdown if he caught it, and it ended with Ryan Mallett's decision to force a pass on the Razorback's final drive as they were in a position (Redzone) to win the game with a touchdown.

It was a disappointing loss, but hog fans can take comfort in the fact that it was a winnable game and that most of the key players on this team will be back next year and new tools will come from this year's recruiting class and redshirts. What remains unknown is whether Mallett will return for his Senior season to improve his draft stock and finish on a better note than throwing a pick on his last pass of the season and losing the Sugar Bowl.

By the way, Ohio State will have a really bad reputation if Terrelle Pryor and other players suspended for the first 5 games of next year decide to enter the NFL draft. Each of these players played a critical role in the game for Ohio State. If they do not return, the University should be punished in another manner.

Coach Petrino picked up a another big man on December 23rd when Jason Peacock, an Offensive Tackle from Citrus Community College in California, committed to the University of Arkansas. Peacock committed after recently visiting the University on December 10. He is 6'4" and 330 lbs and rated as a 5.6 star player by Rivals.com. He chose the Razorbacks over Mississippi State, Arizona, and Utah. He hopes to play left tackle at Arkansas, which is what he played at Junior College.

Petrino snagged a major commitment today from Tevin Mitchel who was previously committed to Nebraska. Mitchel, from Manfield, TX, is 6'0" 180, and he runs a 4.4 40 and is rated as a Rivals 4 Star Cornerback. Mitchel had offers to several schools in the SEC and the Big XII but chose Arkansas after a recent visit to the University.

Petrino Adds Two More for 2011

Petrino nabs 2 more for the class of 2011. Both are currently unranked by recruiting services, but Petrino has a good eye for talent. They will likely be ranked in the near future. These two visited the University of Arkansas over the weekend along with a handful of others.

Rohan Gaines 5'11", 175, 4.4 ATH - played football for Bainbridge High in Bainbridge, Georgia. Will likely project at safety or weakside linebacker.

Petrino Commits to Arkansas

from the UofA...FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas and Bobby Petrino have agreed upon the terms of a new seven-year contract between the University and the Razorbacks' head football coach that will extend through the 2017 season, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long announced on Saturday.

The new agreement will supersede the remaining four years of the original employment agreement and will run through Dec. 31, 2017.

"We are pleased to announce a new agreement with Coach Bobby Petrino that will enable our program to move forward under the leadership of one of the most successful college football coaches in the nation," Long said. "This agreement demonstrates a mutual long-term commitment between Coach Petrino and the University of Arkansas. Coach Petrino has done a tremendous job in leading the Razorback program to new levels of success both on and off the field. I appreciate his strong desire to remain at the University of Arkansas to continue to build our program and positively impact the lives of our student-athletes. I am excited about the direction of the Razorback Football program and look forward to Coach Petrino serving as the head football coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks for many years to come."

In his three seasons at Arkansas, Petrino has propelled the program to unprecedented levels of success including leading the Razorbacks to a 10-2 regular season and the program's first berth in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 2010.

Arkansas will be making its first BCS bowl appearance on Jan. 4, 2011 when the No. 8 Razorbacks take on the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, La. Petrino will become only the third coach in NCAA Football to lead two different teams to a BCS bowl game. In 2007, he led Louisville to a victory in the Orange Bowl.

"I am excited to express my commitment to the University of Arkansas," Petrino said. "Chancellor (Dave) Gearhart and Jeff Long have been tremendous in terms of their support and I appreciate the positive energy the fans have demonstrated. I look forward to continuing to dedicate myself to leading the Razorback football program."

As part of the new agreement, Petrino will receive an increase in his average annual compensation to a total of $3.56 million a year during the length of the agreement. The increase to Coach Petrino's compensation package will be paid with athletic department-generated revenues and private gift support and will not include any taxpayer dollars or student fees. The new agreement will also expand the non-compete clause in Coach Petrino's current agreement to include all Southeastern Conference institutions, rather than being limited to western division institutions only.

"This new long-term agreement is beneficial to our program now and will continue to strengthen our program over time," Long said. "Coach Petrino has stabilized and elevated the success of our program. The mirror image buyout provisions included in the terms of the agreement reflect both parties' serious commitment to each other and to the long-term success of Razorback Football. That will help our ongoing fundraising efforts and send a clear message to prospective football student-athletes about the bright future of our program."

D.J. Williams received two awards for his accomplishments at the University of Arkansas. This week he received the 2010 John Mackey Award, which is presented each year to the top tight end in college football. This is the first time a Razorback has won this award.

In addition, Williams received the Disney Spirit Award as college football's most inspirational player. Congratulations DJ and thanks for choosing Arkansas!

This season DJ hauled in 49 catches for 589 yards and four touchdowns. For his career, he is the active NCAA career leader with 147 receptions for 1,817 yards.

Petrino Adds Junior College LB

Petrino picked up another linebacker for the class of 2011 with the commitment of Phoenix Arizona Junior College. His name is Alonzo Highsmith, and he is 6-1, 215, 4.6. He's originally from Houston, TX. Rivals.com rates him as a 3 star LB and he was recently named the NJCAA Region I Co-Defensive Player of the Year along with cornerback Isiah Wiley of Arizona Western College who also committed to Arkansas. Highsmith is the 4th commitment for the class of 2011 from Arizona. Highsmith is Petrino's 24th commitment for the class of 2011.

Hogs Get Boot, Finish With 10 Wins

The Razorbacks took down the LSU Tigers at War Memorial Saturday in a game that featured many highlights. With a BCS bowl birth at stake, Petrino and his Hogs sweetened up the fans at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock with a 31-23 victory over #6 ranked LSU. With the win, the Razorbacks finished ranked #7 in the BCS and earned a trip to New Orleans for its first ever BCS game (Sugar Bowl)- so long as Auburn takes care of business and wins the SEC Championship against South Carolina this weekend in Atlanta.

Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble...

Battle for the Boot

Arkansas is set to take on #6 ranked LSU in Little Rock this coming Saturday in the annual Battle for the Golden Boot. While this game has no implications on who will play in the SEC Championship game, it could determine who plays in the Sugar Bowl. The winner of this game could very will enjoy a trip to New Orleans for the BCS bowl game.

This rivalry has been a great one to watch in recent years, and this year promises to be another good matchup with #6 ranked LSU Tigers vs. #12 Arkansas Razorbacks. The home crowd promises to be loud and influential at War Memorial for this 2:30 pm CBS game.

Childs Suffers Season Ending Injury

Razorback wide receiver Greg Childs suffered a season ending injury on a 17 yard reception in the fourth quarter of the game against Vanderbilt. Childs damaged his patella tendon, which will require surgery and four to six months to recover.

This is obviously a major loss for the Razorbacks as Childs was a leading receiver with over 650 yards on the season. Fortunately, receiver is a position with a great deal of depth. However, the loss of Childs will not go unnoticed. Hopefully he will return for another season next year.

Major Announcement for Razorback Football

On Wednesday, the University of Arkansas unveiled designs to build a new football operations center south of Razorback Stadium next to the Walker Indoor Pavilion where the existing practice fields reside. New practice fields will be built on the south side of the Walker Indoor Pavilion.

The estimated construction costs for the project come in around $30 million dollars. Funding for the project was kick-started with a $10 million donation from the Reynolds Foundation and remaining funds will most likely come from private donations.

The Athletic Department will soon seek approval from the University's Board of Trustees prior to moving forward with construction plans. Once the project is approved, the University expects to move quickly on approving a construction plan and initiating construction. On Sunday night Petrino added another commitment for the 2011 class. Kelvin Fisher, Jr. of Gilbert, Arizona is a 5'11" 180 lbs athlete who runs a 4.5 40. He is a versatile player who could play on both sides of the football in college. He is a high level 3 star Rivals player. Fisher chose the Razorbacks over several Pac 10 schools and other colleges across the country.

Petrino Picks Up Two More for 22

After the big win over Ole Miss Saturday, Coach Petrino picked up two major commitments for the 2011 class with tight end Chris Barnett of Dallas, TX, and wide receiver Quinta Funderburke of Chesapeake, VA. Barnett is 6'6" 240 lbs and runs a 4.55 40. Funderburke is 6'5" 200 and runs a 4.5 40. Barnett, a 4 star Rivals player, chose the Razorbacks over Alabama, Oklahoma, USC and others. Funderburke, a high 3 star Rivals player, chose Arkansas over Florida, Michigan, West Virginia and others.

Both of these players are talented enough to contribute very early next year.

Razorbacks Storm Bears

The Razorbacks finally got a win over Houston Nutt's Ole Miss Rebel Black Bears yesterday (38-24) in Fayetteville. The game lasted over five hours with two weather delays caused by lightening, high winds and hail. The Razorbacks turned their fortunes from the previous week with much improved defense, special teams and running game.

The Razorbacks defense impressed with two goal line stands and quarterback containment. Special teams nailed a 46 yard field goal and Joe Adams returned a punt 97 yards for a touchdown. Knile Davis took control of the offense on the ground gaining 176 yards and 3 touchdowns on 22 carries.

Ryan Mallett was shaky once again and was knocked out of the game with a sore shoulder after throwing for 196 yards. His injury leaves his status against Vanderbilt next week in question, but the team has a great deal of confidence in backup Tyler Wilson after his performances in the last two games. Also injured in the game were Joe Adams and Greg Childs who both sprained their ankles. They are also questionable for next week's game.

The Razorbacks lost on the road at #7 Auburn in a game that included many points, poor officiating, injuries, poor tackling, and another fourth quarter let down. It was an exciting game to watch, but losing another SEC game makes any hopes of winning an SEC Championship look real slim. The final score was 43-65 with The SEC referees putting up 14 points for Auburn with two absolutely terrible calls. The Razorbacks kickoff team was not good at all on returns or coverage, even giving up a 99 yard kickoff return to the one yard line.

The biggest news of the game was the injury of Ryan Mallett who checked out of the game after taking a big hit in the second quarter. At first it was unclear what type of injury he sustained, but it turned out to be a concussion resulting from a horse collar tackle (no penalty called) that left him in street clothes the entire second half of the game. Tyler Wilson stepped up big throwing for 4 touchdowns in the game and giving the Razorbacks a 6 point lead early in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately his spectacular play went south from there as he threw two picks to Auburn's middle linebacker later in the fourth quarter. Also, the Razorback defense looked lethargic in their efforts late in the game as they failed to make tackles and create turnovers.

This coming week the Razorbacks will take on the Ole Miss Bears? in a matchup in Fayetteville. This is a huge game for the Razorbacks and Coach Petrino as they hope to get their first win against former coach Houston Nutt since he was fired from Arkansas. I look for the Razorbacks to play with a lot of passion and aggression. It's unclear if Mallett will be available, but Tyler Wilson proved against Auburn that he's plenty capable of leading the offense.

The Razorbacks won a close fought game 24-17 against the Aggies in Dallas on Saturday. The game was plagued with penalties on both sides of the ball, and it was generally a boring game to watch. Hopefully the Hogs get their game together as they go on the road to take on the undefeated #7 Auburn Tigers.

Arkansas lost a heartbreaker in Fayetteville against Alabama on September 25th. I'm just now getting over it, and I think the team is too. Seeing Bama demolish Florida helps, and knowing we'll be playing A&M at Jerry's World this weekend helps. I'm actually pretty fired up for this weekend and I hope we beat the hell out of them. Without going into too much detail about the loss to Bama, I will say that the Razorbacks looked like a top ten team if Bama is number one in the country. The Razorbacks let a victory slip from their grasp late in the fourth quarter losing 24-20. Through most of the third quarter the Razorbacks held a 20-7 lead, but that obviously did not last as the Crimson Tide owned the final 20 minutes of the game. The Razorbacks slipped from #10 to #15 after the loss, but they moved back up the polls after their bye week to #11. The Razorbacks are the highest ranked one loss team in the country. If they get back to winning they will continue to move up the rankings. Go Hogs!

#12 Ranked Razorbacks Prepared for Road

This Saturday Arkansas wants to make a statement and get a win that could move the team into the top ten. The Razorbacks have revenge on their mind from the sour taste left in their mouth after last years shootout in Fayetteville. Unfortunately the Razorbacks will have to do it without all-star running back Dennis Johnson who underwent surgery for a serious bowel injury resulting from falling on the football wrong in last week's game against Louisiana Monroe. He could be sidelined for the year and possibly longer with his injury. Luckily the Razorbacks are deep with talent at running back. Knile Davis, Broderick Green, and Ronnie Wingo will likely share the load. All have talent and bring different looks to a defense. Also, De'Anthony Curtis could get more looks at running back. The game will begin at noon EST and will be televised on ESPN. Get Ready!

Arkansas was victorious in their second game of the season. They started slow, but finished strong, defeating Louisiana Monroe 31-7 in Little Rock in front of a packed house of rowdy tailgaters on Saturday night. The hogs take their game on the road this week to play Georgia in Athens. Georgia is coming off a 17-6 loss to South Carolina. Unfortunately, the Razorbacks will be without starting tailback Dennis Johnson due to an intestinal injury sustained in the ULM game. He could be out for the season depending on his recovery from surgery performed after the game. Luckily this is a position that has depth with 4 backup running backs.

Florida CB Commits to Hogs

On Friday, the Razorbacks received a commitment defensive back Jared Singletary of Green Cove Springs, Florida. Singletary is a 5'10" 180 lbs cornerback with 4.45 speed and good football instincts. His commitment brings the total number of Razorback commitments for 2011 to 19 with the inclusion of Florida WR Marquel Wade who was unable to qualify academically to be a Razorback in 2010.

Razorblogger's 2010 Predictions

It's time for Razorblogger's overly optimistic predictions for the upcoming football season. Last year, I was overly optimistic, but actually fairly accurate. We'll see about this year.

I do see a lot of points being scored, but I don't have us scoring 60 or more points in any games.

How optimistic are my predictions?

Well, I am predicting an undefeated regular season.

I am not going to predict much beyond that, but I will make vague predictions on who our opponents will be. My crystal ball does show a BCS bowl for the 2010 season. Not sure about a Heisman, but I predict we will have at least one finalist in New York for the Downtown Athletic Club's ceremony. Will the Crystal Ball come to Fayetteville? This team thinks they have a shot to do something special this year...

Sept. 4, 2010 Tennessee Tech 59-13
Arkansas goes buck wild in the first half of this game. Size and speed are obvious advantages for the hogs as they score easily on four of their first five drives. Mallett throws for four touchdowns, but the running backs live up to their unit nickname (Four Headed Monster) putting on the show with all four running backs scoring touchdowns in the game. Backup QBs look solid throwing with high completion percentages in the second half. Defense creates 3 turnovers and looks solid against the run, but Petrino remains unsatisfied with the defensive backfield.

Sept. 11, 2010 ULM 52-20
Little Rock was rocking for this night game at War Memorial. Everyone comes away pleased with the Razorbacks except Coach Petrino, who is still harping on the defense for giving up too many yards and too many big plays due to players being out of position. Mallett had another big game, and the Heisman talk is buzzing with the numbers he's putting up. The two game total is already over 500 yards with 8 touchdowns and no interceptions. The Razorbacks move up the polls pushing for a spot in the top ten, but pundits remain skeptical with the SEC opponents looming. However, everyone recognizes that the defense is much improved over 2010 and the Hogs avoided any major injuries in the first two games.

Sept. 18, 2010 at Georgia 38-28
The Razorbacks head to Athens with a chip on their shoulder and get revenge for their loss the previous year. Ronnie Wingo and Knile Davis bring back flashes of DMAC and Jones as they rack up 100 yards each on the ground and wear out Georgia's defense. Mallett has another solid performance, but throws two picks early. He makes up for his picks with 250 passing yards and 3 TDs. The defense stepped up their game and shut down Georgia's running game and put pressure on Georgia's QB. This win pushes Arkansas into the top ten, and the hype goes national. ESPN appears to have bought into the hype, at least for the time being, since they've announced that Gameday will be in Fayetteville next week for the game against the undefeated, defending national champions Alabama Crimson Tide. The Heisman/National Championship hype is way too loud and way too early, but it's everywhere.

Sept. 25, 2010 Alabama 31-20
ESPN College Gameday is back in Fayetteville for a matchup of two top ten teams. Arkansas is ranked 10 going into the game, and undefeated Alabama remains number 1. The vibe in Fayetteville is optimistic and confident. Every hog fan wants a win, and the mood is contagious. This game turns out to be a ground game battle with passes sprinkled in for both teams. Mallett is able to use play action fakes to throw for some big gains against Alabama's inexperienced defensive backfield. The highlight of this game is the option run out of the pistol, or "shot," formation, which gives the Razorbacks 350 yards on the ground, doubling their passing yards. The upset pushes Arkansas all the way up the polls to number 4, and Alabama slides to number 5. The national coverage of the hogs explodes as the media recognizes the improvement on defense and the dynamic offense. The number one attribute of this team? Leadership.

Oct. 9, 2010 at Texas A&M 35-24
The Razorbacks face an improved Aggie squad, but Arkansas is still bigger, faster and stronger. Greg Childs steps up big and introduces himself to the A&M defensive backfield. Jake Bequette sacks A&M's all star QB 3 times and causes a fumble that he recovers. Darius Winston gets an interception and shows his 5 Star skills taking it to the house for 6. The offense is salt and pepper with the run/pass combo, which was nearly balanced at 200 yards a piece. Broderick shows his short yardage skills in this game scoring at the goal line and picking up key 3rd down conversions. Hogs move up to number 3 with this win.

Oct. 16, 2010 at Auburn 31-28
ESPN Gameday returns to the SEC for a matchup between two undefeated top three ranked teams. There is a lot of talk about BCS opportunities for these teams. The talk is all about Arkansas though. Not just the team, which was now in an unfamiliar place, but the Arkansas connection on the Auburn team. Auburn's offensive coordinator, Gus Malzahn, a former Arkansas high school coach and Razorback offensive coordinator, has 3 all-stars starting on his side of the field in WR Kodi Burns, RB Michael Dyer, and OT Lee Ziemba. Unfortunately for Malzahn, the Razorbacks love beating up on these traitors, and it shows in this game as some wicked hits come from Arkansas's defense. This game his a slogfest, and Arkansas wins late with an Alex Tejada field goal. There are no stars in this game as it was a genuine team effort. Tight ends DJ Williams and Ben Cleveland both scored, which is somewhat unusual for Arkansas's offense. The Razorbacks become the number one team in the nation.

Oct. 23, 2010 Ole Miss 49-17
Finally. Petrino gets past Nutt, and this time it's for good. Houston Nutt is suffering a miserable year in Oxford with QBs Masoli and Stanley both suffering from injuries. Houston has two walkons picking up the slack. Karma. Mallett has a big game throwing touchdowns to Childs, Wright, Adams, Hamilton, Williams and Wingo. The Razorback ground game is solid too earning 300 yards and a touchdown. Defense is solid as a rock in this game shutting down the passing game, the running game, and the desperate trickery from the Nuttster.

Oct. 30, 2010 Vanderbilt 38-13
Mallett gets a breather, and backups provide solid relief. Tyler Wilson and Brandon Mitchell impress with clock management and consistent passing. The running backs put on the show in this game, and the tight ends are all over the field blocking, catching, and scoring. Special teams step up in this game and looks like they're now something to talk about.

Nov. 6, 2010 at South Carolina 28-21
Going on the road to Columbia turns out to be tough for the Razorbacks after a comfortable stretch on the home turf. This ESPN night game brings about a loud home crowd, and Mallett struggles. He throws three interceptions in this game and only one touchdown. After going down early and trailing at half, Petrino leans on the running game in the second half and has some luck as the Razorbacks score 3 unanswered touchdowns on the ground in second half to win the game and hold off the Cocks. Broderick Green proves to be a bull as he carries the load late in the game gaining 50 yards on 8 carries for a touchdown on the final scoring drive. Petrino takes a deep breath after this game as do all hog fans hoping for the dream season.

Nov. 13, 2010 Texas-El Paso 49-21
Cakewalk. The Razorbacks throw up some impressive numbers in this game, and some freshmen shine in the second half. Petrino allows the first team offense to take the entire fourth quarter off. Everyone is talking Mallett for Heisman, and the video highlights back it up.

Nov. 20, 2010 at Miss. State 28-17
Rain, rain, rain. Yup...I'm predicting weather too. This turns out to be a rushing battle that ultimately is won in the trenches. Arkansas's depth on the offensive line and at running back allow the Razorbacks to defeat a well coached Mississippi State team. The men up front on defense step up their game as well, and create turnovers that are key changes in field position. The bulldogs show flashes of greatness, but lack of depth is pretty clear in this game. The Razorbacks are pleased with this win, but more pleased when their plane takes off from Starkville. Wingo proves that he can run in the mud better than any of the other backs.

Nov. 27, 2010 LSU 38-32
The number one Arkansas Razorbacks are playing for a national championship game here. If they lose, they likely slip out of the picture, even with an SEC Championship victory. LSU brings in a decent squad with great athletic ability. Their 7 win record is not a great reflection of their talent. Unfortunately, Les Miles has let the team slip out of his hands. While this game is a decent battle, the Razorbacks are playing for much more than a bowl placement, and it shows. The Razorbacks win this game despite a late push by the Tigers in the final minutes of the game. It's not a miracle this time, but it goes down as an instant classic.

The Heisman appears to clearly Mallett's, and the Razorbacks are in the driver's seat for the National Championship game, but they must get one more win against the SEC East's best team. It won't be easy, but it is necessary to make the BIG game. The national media turns on the hogs, and the doubters return. What will happen in that big game? Will Arkansas win the SEC Championship? Will they get a shot at the Sears Trophy? Can they win the BIG game? Time will tell...

Dickinson, Texas ATH Jashaud Sims committed to Arkansas today. Sims, a 6'4" 215 athlete, runs a 4.4 40 and has tremendous instincts and ball skills. He selected Arkansas over Florida, LSU, and Texas. Sims tore his MCL during his junior year, but he looks to show off his recovered legs during his senior year. Most teams are recruiting Sims as a cornerback or safety, but Petrino would like to try him at wide receiver.

2 More Gets Petrino to 16 Commitments for 2011

Today, Petrino received two additional commitments for the class of 2011. The first commitment received today came from Kody Walker, a 6'1" 230lb 4.7 40 Running Back from Jefferson City, Missouri. Walker is rated the number 5 player in Missouri and the 29th RB nationwide according to Rivals, and he does well to fit the Petrino offense as a big back. Walker chose Arkansas over Missouri and others. The second commitment of the day came from Monroe, Louisiana (Neville) Defensive Tackle Demarcus Hodge. Hodge is 6'1" 300lbs and runs a 5.0 40. He chose Arkansas over Tennessee, Missouri, MIssissippi State, TCU and others. He is rated the number 15 recruit in Louisiana and the number 28th DT nationwide according to Rivals.

Petrino landed commitment number 14 for the 2011 class from Lufkin, TX. Darrell Kelly-Thomas is a 6'4", 220 lb, 4.6 40 Defensive End. He is tall and long armed. He brings tremendous athletic upside, but he'll need to add some weight to his frame in order to compete in the SEC. Luckily Arkansas has a 100 yard weight room and a great strength and conditioning coach for Mr. Kelly-Thomas. He may need a redshirt year to build that body and learn the defense. Kelly-Thomas chose Arkansas over Baylor, TCU, and Houston among others. Kelly-Thomas is the first of what Petrino hopes will be a handful of commitments from the state of Texas for the 2011 class.

He brings great size, decent speed, good ball skills, and pure athletic ability. He has selected Arkansas over several other SEC schools. He's a Rivals 3 star and ESPN 4 star athlete. He runs a 4.6 40 and weighs 230.

Cook, who played for Springdale Har-Ber is the number one recruit in Arkansas and a top ten Offensive Lineman in the country. Petrino picked up commit number ten yesterday. Arizona Western Community College cornerback Isiah Wiley is a 6-1, 184, 4.39 CB. A West Monroe, LA native, he originally planned to commit to Alabama out of high school, but failed to qualify academically so he decided to attend a community college in Arizona to become eligible. He was recruited by new offensive line coach Chris Klenakis and defensive coordinator Willy Robinson. Wiley chose Arkansas over LSU and others citing closeness to home, needs at the position, coaching staff, and facilities as reasons for choosing Arkansas. There is a chance that Wiley will join the Razorbacks at the start of the second semester in January 2011.

6'5", 315 lb, Marcus Danenhauer of Bentonville, AR became the latest Razorback commitment in a class that is quickly taking shape to be Petrino's best class. This class so far is being built from the middle out towards the skill positions. Danenhauer is a solid OL player with the size and weight to be a real bear on the line. He comes from great bloodlines having had an uncle and grandfather play in the NFL. Danenhauer was heavily recruited by the SEC, ACC, Big XII, and Pac 10.

Coach Petrino added another commitment to the 2011 Class today when Springdale OT Mitch Smothers gave his pledge to the Razorbacks. Smothers, 6-4, 290, is a big-time player, and he selected Arkansas over many major schools including SEC West Rivals Alabama and Auburn among others. Petrino is currently on a roll in committing big fellows on both sides of the ball. Many hog fans are hopeful that more good news will be coming soon with the commitment of another big-time OL recruit from Arkansas, Brey Cook also of Springdale. Both project at high four star caliber or even five star.

Petrino Lands 2 More for 2011

Coach Petrino nabbed two players on Wednesday for the 2011 recruiting class with the commitment of DT Grady Ollison of Malvern, Arkansas, and CB/WR Keonte Minor of East St. Louis, Illinois. Ollison is 6-5, 283, and runs a 4.9 40 yard dash. Minor is 6-0, 194 and runs a 4.4 40 yard dash. Minor was being recruited heavily by Big 12 and Big 10 teams. Ollison comes from Razorback stock. He is the nephew of former Razorback Tony Ollison and the first cousin of another Razorback, Vincent Bradford. He is rated as the number one defensive player in the state for the 2011 recruiting class. He has the prototypical DT frame, and he's being heavily recruited by SEC and Big 12 schools.

Notes:

QB Play - Mallett sat out while recovering from ankle surgury. Wilson played ok, but did not put on much of a show. Very impressed with redshirt freshman Brandon Mitchell and true freshman Jacoby Walker. Very confident players with speed and excellent throwing ability.

RB Play - Dennis Johnson was consistent and looked like Dennis Johnson from last year. Wingo is a beast with tremendous speed. Knile Davis (broken collar bone) was fast and strong. Broderick is big, strong and looked faster than last year.

TE - DJ Williams was solid as usual. Looks a little slimmer in the waist with a little more speed.

WR - Solid all the way around. Not much changed from last year. Lance Ray had a great catch. Childs, Adams, and Wright are deadly.

OL - Line looked pretty solid, but gave up some plays. Maybe this means our DL has improved.

DL - They looked pretty good getting into the backfield and slowing the run. DEs look super solid and don't see any drop off with Shepherd gone.

LB - Did not see much impressive here. Still a weakness. Not good at filling gaps or making plays on crossing passes.

CB - Much better, but out of position a few times.

S - These guys seemed to be out of position several times. They gave up some big plays and did not impress much on bringing hard hits. I miss having a headhunter back there.

Bottom Line:
We will be much better on both sides of the ball. Our offense will put up even more points next year on the ground and in the air. The new "shot" formation adds a new dimension with a lot of misdirection. Defense will be better, but they still need work on assignments, tackling, and other fundamentals. Defense does still have a nose for creating turnovers. We could have a very special season if the ball bounces right for us in the big games.
