Southwest Classic

This Saturday, October 3, 2009, the Razorbacks will take on Texas A&M in former Razorback Jerry Jones's new playground. The hogs are 1-2 and the aggies are 3-0. While undefeated, Texas A&M could be vulnerable because they have not challenged themselves with their previous wins. They were all cupcakes. Also, keep in mind that Arkansas State beat A&M last year and finished the season 4-8.

Petrino hopes playing in Dallas will help with Texas recruiting, which the Razorbacks have always depended heavily on.

BAMA Proves TOO BIG To Beat

The Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Razorbacks 35-7 in Tuscaloosa. The size, speed, and strength of the #3 ranked team proved too much for the Razorbacks. While the defense played better overall, they still gave up a handful of big plays, and the offense never got in a groove.

This week, the Razorbacks will travel to Dallas to take on Texas A&M in the new billion dollar Cowboys Stadium.

ESPN Story on Razorback Great Quinn Grovey

Where are they now: Quinn Grovey

September 25, 2009 4:03 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

Leaving the state of Oklahoma to play football wasn’t easy for Quinn Grovey.

He jokes that former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer could recruit a shark to live on dry land.

And to this day, the folks in Grovey’s hometown of Duncan, Okla., still let him hear about it when he goes home.

“But it’s the best decision I ever made,” said Grovey, one of the most exciting quarterbacks in Arkansas history. “There’s nothing like Hog football. If I had to do it all over again, I’d choose Arkansas 10 out of 10 times.”
Joe Patronite /Allsport
Quinn Grovey says he has no regrets about leaving his home state to play for Arkansas.

As fate would have it, Arkansas played Oklahoma in the 1987 Orange Bowl following Grovey’s first season in Fayetteville. He redshirted that year and didn’t play, but the 42-8 loss to the Sooners reverberated in more ways than one.

“Every time they scored a touchdown, they’d drive by our house and throw oranges,” remembered Grovey, who finds the prank funnier now than he did nearly 23 years ago. “Our front yard was covered in oranges.”

By the time Grovey left Arkansas in 1990, he was covered in adulation. He remains one of the most popular Hogs of the Southwest Conference era and really never left.

Now 41, he still lives in Fayetteville with his wife, Stacy, and their 15-year-old daughter, Kelsey. Grovey is a regional human resources manager at Home Depot and travels extensively in his job.

On the weekends, he can be heard on the Arkansas radio network. He’s a co-host of the pregame and postgame shows and serves as the sideline reporter during games.

“These fans eat, drink and sleep Hog football, and to be able to bring it to them is pretty special,” said Grovey, who played briefly in the CFL after leaving Arkansas.

The Hog Nation can still see No. 4 scooting around right end on an option keeper and leading Arkansas to back-to-back Southwest Conference championships in 1988 and 1989. A three-year starter, he finished his career with 4,496 passing yards and 1,746 rushing yards.

Grovey passed for 29 touchdowns and ran for 21 touchdowns. He and Matt Jones are the only players in Arkansas history in the 20-20 club.

Winning the back-to-back SWC titles remains Grovey’s fondest memory, particularly since Arkansas hadn’t won one in nine years.

“Going to the Cotton Bowl those two years was special, even though we didn’t win either one,” said Grovey, who played for Ken Hatfield at Arkansas. “It was good just to be a part of that whole experience and to see what it meant to the Hog fans to be there in Dallas.”

Grovey’s most memorable game is easy: Arkansas’ 45-39 win over Houston in 1989. He outdueled Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware that day, only a week after Houston and its run-and-shoot offense had mauled SMU 95-21.

“It was a must-win game for us to keep our Cotton Bowl hopes alive,” recalled Grovey, who rushed for three touchdowns, threw two touchdowns passes and finished with 335 yards of total offense. “We had just come off a tough loss to Texas and had to have that game to stay in contention. We probably played our best game of the season.”

Grovey said he was blessed to be surrounded by great players at Arkansas, including the likes of Barry Foster, Steve Atwater and Wayne Martin.

He also played against some great players.

“Andre Ware and I used to go at it. We had a pretty good rivalry going,” Grovey said. “Defensively, I could name the entire 1987 Miami Hurricane defense, but that would probably take too long. They had a great player at every position.”

The Hurricanes routed Arkansas 51-7 that season in Little Rock on their way to the national championship. That next year, Arkansas was leading Miami in the fourth quarter at the Orange Bowl, but the Hurricanes kicked a field goal in the final minutes to win 18-16 and send the Hogs to their first loss of the season after a 10-0 start.

For Grovey, that one still stings.

“We had them beat, and they came back and got us there at the end,” he said.

Grovey said the biggest change he’s seen in college football, specifically the SEC, is the NFL's influence with all the intricate schemes the teams are running now on offense and defense.

“With all the former NFL coaches in this league, what they’re doing on this level schematically is completely different,” Groves said. “When I played, you didn’t see fire blitzes and zone blitzes. Now, they’ve got people coming out of nowhere after the quarterback.

“It’s a whole new ballgame with how they’re trying to confuse the quarterback on the pre-snap read. They’re also asking the quarterbacks to do more. They’re asking the receivers to do more. Nowadays, you’ve got people reading coverages on the run. There are so many things people are trying to do to gain an advantage. It's confusing for everybody."

D Wins Game

D=Dawgs

The Razorbacks came up short in a Saturday night shootout that lasted almost 4 hours. The ball was full of helium as both QBs threw for 5 touchdowns. The clock ticked very slowly and both defenses looked soft.

The Razorback defense was absolutely terrible. Especially in the defensive backfield where safeties were consistently out of position and cornerbacks were unable to keep up with wide receivers.

If Willy Robinson does not turn his group around or begin to make wholesale substitutions (think Winston, Crim, Leon, Gordon) in the next few games, he will be looking for a new job soon. In addition, Petrino will obviously need to focus on bringing in defensive players in the 2010 class.

On a positive note, the Razorbacks offense is very, very good and should be able to look impressive throughout the season even against the best defenses. The running game needs a little improvement, but the passing game is top notch.

The hogs are now 1-1, 0-1 in the SEC. This weekend they will travel to Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide. They will play 10 straight games for the remainder of the season with no bye weeks.

Hogs Start Season Off Right

Dennis Johnson took the opening kickoff the distance for six, and the Razorbacks never looked back on their way to soundly defeating the Missouri State Bears 48-10. Mallett looked sharp completing his first 9 passes, and Wilson played well too. The hogs offense proved explosive and deep at the offensive skill positions. The defense held their own creating two turnovers. However, they did miss some tackles and give up some big yard plays. Special teams did well on field goals and kickoff returns, but the Tejada kicked 2 out of bounds. Punt return did not impress. There were also some penalties that were uncalled for. Unfortunately, London Crawford went down in the game with a broken collarbone, and he'll be out for at least a few weeks.

Razorblogger's Predictions

The 2009 Razorback football season kicks off tomorrow at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. Coach Petrino is entering his second season with a more complete team that is anticipated to be much improved on defense and explosive on offense. The players are bigger, stronger, faster, and more experienced with the Petrino system. Razorback fans are excited about the rebounding hogs and the opportunity that a new season brings.

With my own sense of excitement, I've decided to make a brief and very optimistic prediction of how I think the 2009 season might play out. So, here we go...

Sat, Sep 5 Missouri State Final Score: 55-17

Arkansas will have their way with Missouri State. The game will be over at halftime and Arkansas will put up some big numbers on offense and their defense will look very fast and create turnovers. Several Razorback players will get to play in this game and the stat sheet will be full.

Sat, Sep 19 (13) Georgia Final Score: 35-24

Arkansas will have a tough game against Georgia, but they will pull it out in the second half of the ball game thanks to the home crowd and the depth at running back. The hogs offense will bring a balanced attack keeping Georgia's defense on their heels and guessing. This win will be a great boost to the Razorbacks and a huge confidence builder.

Sat, Sep 26 at (5) Alabama Final Score: 24-20

Did we just do that? Yes we did. The Razorbacks will shock a highly ranked Alabama team on the road. The reason? Alabama's offense is not all that, and Arkansas's is. However, Alabama's defense proves their legitimacy. Petrino gets some serious recognition on ESPN as this game makes major headlines.

Sat, Oct 3 at Texas A&M Final Score: 42-28

Arkansas fans travel. Especially to the Big D. Jerry Jones smiles from ear to ear as the Razorbacks dominate their old SWC foe at his new playground.

Sat, Oct 10 Auburn Final Score: 38-21

Auburn will have a rough 2009 season trying to operate Gus Mahlzan's hurry-up, no-huddle offense with new Head Coach Gene Chizick. In October, Auburn fans are trying to figure out if it's possible to rehire Tubberville or save Houston Dale from Ole Miss.

Sat, Oct 17 at (1) Florida Final Score: 21-41

Florida proves too much for Arkansas. Arkansas competes well, but Florida's speed on offense just wears our defense out in the second half. The Razorback players show a little midseason fatigue.

Sat, Oct 24 at (8) Mississippi Final Score: 28-24
